Lauren "Betty" Baxter (née Smith) is Blythe's late mother. Her name is revealed in The Tortoise and the Heir.
Speedy Shellberg thinks Blythe looks like her and he also revealed she could also talk to animals. She had a journal which was kept in Speedy who eventually gave the diary to her daughter Blythe while mistaking Blythe for Betty.
Betty's once temporarily loss her ability to communicate with pets from having a cold herbal medicine.[1]
